How to use fentanyl citrate buccal

Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using fentanyl and each time you get a refill. Learn all usage and disposal instructions. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Use this medication as directed by your doctor. Just before using, open the blister pack unit as directed. Do not push the tablet through the foil of the blister pack because this could damage the tablet. Place the tablet in your mouth either above a rear molar tooth between your upper cheek and gum or under the tongue. Leave the medication in place until it is dissolved (usually 14 to 25 minutes). Do not break, bite, chew, suck, or swallow the tablet whole. You may feel a gentle bubbling in your mouth while the tablet dissolves. Do not eat or drink anything while the tablet dissolves. If there is still some tablet left after 30 minutes, swallow it with a glass of water. If you are placing the tablet between your cheek and gum, remember to change sides of the mouth between doses.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

If you start to have side effects (such as dizziness, feeling sick to your stomach, severe drowsiness) before finishing a dose, your doctor may need to adjust your dose. Rinse your mouth with water and spit the rest of the tablet into a sink or toilet. Rinse the sink or flush the toilet afterward to finish proper disposal. Tell your doctor promptly if this happens.

This medication is AWESOME and works great for my breakthrough pain. I have a disease in which all of the bones in my large joints (hips, shoulders) are slowly dying from lack of blood. The bad part of this medication is that it is very expensive and most insurance companies don’t cover it. However, it is definately worth fighting for. I couldn’t get through the day without this medication.

35 year old female with daily chronic headache for nearly five years–had migraines that began around puberty & were increasingly adversely affected by hormones & weather changes. I have used Fentora bucl in the past to help with breakthrough pain, & for headaches-for me- the lozenges work the best because I can take them out if I start to get the signs of a rebound headache. I can then reintroduce them as needed. This is the most helpful medicine because I can take it even with my severe nausea from my pain. I have been using these for four years, and whether or not it is because I have “red hair mutation”, it is the one thing to which building up tolerance has not been a problem! People say that opiates give rebound headaches. Well, I am living proof that you can learn how to work around that. My doctor has been phenomenal at listening to me and finding ways to help me be successful at living with chronic pain! Throughout the years I have been on a variety of medications with the “suckers”, & well, I hope that this will encourage patients & doctors both to realize that the patient must be given control in some form or fashion.

currently take Dilaudid 2mg to 4mg, at one point was on 600mcq Actiq, with fentanyl transdermal patch 100mcq, and Dilaudid. Now on 200mcq Actiq and 2mg Dilaudid. works well when combined with other meds. Less side effects than other oral meds, Ie oxycontin, etc. I have tried the generic form and the brand name form Actiq, The actiq is far superior, It costs alot more, my insurance does cover it, i have a preauthorization for cancer. I do go to a pain management specialist, we cannot understand why it costs so much, he said in the operating room they push it all of the time, the cost is cents on the dollar per mcq. meaning in the OR lets say they use 400mcq total IV, they cost is like under $50.00, but when i fill my prescription for 120 600mcq Actiq pops it is $6000.00, 200mcq $4400.00, thats crazy, thankfully insurance covers mine, so i really feel for those who have to pay out of pocket. causes less gastro symptoms for me anyways, overall a good drug, right now they are field testing it on ambulances to give instead of morphine, however the cost is causing a problem. i am allergic to morphine, so fentanyl and dilaudid work good for me, and believe me I have tried everything. The oxycontin caused a bowel obstruction, beacuase I was so sick when i was on it, I couln’t eat or drink much at all. After that incident which landed me in the hospital, we swiched to fentanyl. Hopes this helps

THIS DRUG HAS KEPT ME OUT OF OVERNIGHT VISITS AT THE HOSPITAL FOR PAIN CONTROL. i HAV BEEN ON IT 3YRS. tO EXPENSIVE TO PAY CASH. INSURANCE DOESN’T AUTHORIZE UNLESS IT IS FOR CANCER. I use it for pain control not due to cancer, its be a miricle. 2009 formulary does not include Actiq needs Prior Autho. and insurance not willing to ok it,,, Needs to be more price effective and used for breakthough pain more often.

I use the generic form of Actiq, Fentanyl Citrate. I currently am using one as I write this, it works really well, and does a great job of taking care of the breakthrough pain that I experience. I’m on OxyContin 80mg b.i.d. and use Oxycodone 15mg also for the, “not-so-debilitating” breakthough pain. However, as well as it works, I am on a lot of medications and some of which cause dry mouth, so it is somewhat difficult to get it to dissolve under an hour. I sometimes chew it, which gets the medicine going faster, says my doctor. It is very, very sugary, and I already have dental problems, and I’ve read about some of the potential dental problems associated with taking this medication, so I am now in the process of switching to Fentora, though I haven’t taken one of the buccal tablets (Fentora) yet. I expect that it will help just the same, maybe a little better than the Actiq.
